Parent Information

South Western Youth Basketball is an organization completely run by volunteers. We provide playing opportunities for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8.

Divisions

  • Seniors – 7th & 8th grade
  • Juniors – 5th & 6th grade
  • Rinks – 3rd & 4th grade
  • Intramurals – 2nd & 3rd grade

There are two leagues (“A” and “B”) in which Seniors, Juniors and Rinks compete throughout the York County area. Intramurals is a program that is completely run within the South Western School District.

The York/Adams Youth Basketball A League has approximately 20 organizations where we compete with other school youth teams from the York/Adams County area. This is competitive league where scores and standings are kept. The top 8 teams make a single elimination playoff tournament at the end of the season.

The York/Adams Youth Basketball B League also has approximately 20 organizations but is not as competitive as the A League. Wins and losses are not tracked. All teams have opportunity to participate in a tournament at the end of the season.

Beginning in November, A and B teams hold two 90-minute practices per week at one of the South Western elementary schools. The A and B League games are played on Saturdays and/or Sundays beginning the first weekend in December. The A League runs through February with playoffs in the first two weekends in March. The B League runs through early February with the tournament held on various weekends in February.

Intramural/Development teams practice 1 – 2 times per week.

To select teams, evaluations are held in October with the assistance of South Western High School and Middle School coaches. Teams usually consist of 10 or 11 players. Due to the large number of players trying out, cuts unfortunately need to be made. Our organization makes an effort to create “C” teams whenever possible, often depending on the availability of volunteer coaches. There is no league for the C teams so they traditionally play games at the Hanover YMCA and against Catholic Youth Organization (“CYO”) teams. The season for the C teams generally begins in November and ends in January.

For Seniors (7th & 8th graders), evaluations for both boys and girls are part of the school team evaluations in mid-November. Seniors who are not selected for a school team may wish to participate in the York/Adams Youth Basketball A or B league.  Seniors must register in September to be eligible to play in York/Adams Youth Basketball A or B league.  Juniors and Seniors may wish to participate in the intramural program run by the school on Saturdays beginning in December and running through February (see the school website for more information).

Cost/Breakdown

Cost for this season will be $65 for registration fee and uniforms will be $60 for Rinks, Juniors, and Seniors that make a travel or intramural (YMCA) team. The 2nd and 3rd graders on a Development team will have a registration fee of $50. Admission to games is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for students. Game admission fees are used to cover the referee costs. We also run a concession stand at each home game to supplement the cost of the referees and other organization costs. Parents of players are required to take a few turns at the concession stand and/or work the door during the season.

Cancellation

When school and/or after-school activities are cancelled for the South Western School District, practice is also cancelled.
